Manual Neurovascular Release (NVR) Part 1: Neck, "Roots of Arms," and Upper Thorax (in-person)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Manual NVR curriculum integrates techniques, perspectives, and practices from structural
integration, osteopathy, and clinical massage. In this course series, you learn to improve
structural and functional balance through techniques and strategies for working with tension in
the artery network, fascial restriction of peripheral and cranial nerves, dural restrictions in the
spinal column and head, and neural and vascular tension affecting the viscera.
In Manual NVR Part 1 we will dive into details in the region of the neck, head, and upper thorax,
including the shoulder girdle, the rib cage, and the neural, vascular, and visceral contents of the
rib cage.
Half of what you learn in this course will be methods for gently and precisely working with the
vascular system to normalize tone in hypertonic muscles that are shortening the myofascial
tracks, distorting posture, and limiting movement. These artery techniques are indispensable for
whiplash and frozen shoulder, and they are key for freeing the neck and realigning the upper
body.
In addition to the artery work, you will learn to work with restrictions of the cervical plexus,
brachial plexus, intercostal nerves, accessory nerve, vagus nerve, phrenic nerve, and dura with
the goals of reducing pain and improving structural and functional balance.
You will also:
As you add techniques to your tool bag, we will discuss applications and strategies for working
with clients who have specific mobility problems and imbalances related to thoracic outlet
syndrome, whiplash, jaw issues, shoulder injuries, heart or breast surgery, hypermobility, and
scoliosis.
Over time, your clients or patients will notice improved proprioception, interoception, and
nervous system regulation, and they will grow in their appreciation for how smart and adaptive
their bodies are.
Prerequisite: This course is for all licensed manual therapists, including structural integrators,
massage therapists, physiotherapists, physical therapists, osteopaths, and acupuncturists. Kier
recommends that most practitioners take the Intro course first (Introduction to Manual
Neurovascular Release for Structural and Functional Balance) although it is not required.
Please see the FAQ on Kier's course website for guidance on whether to take the Intro
course or Manual NVR Part 1, and schedule a Zoom call with Kier if you have any
questions.

You will also:
- learn to use less physical effort
- become more efficient
- learn new strategies for classic problems
- improve your layer palpation
- grow your ability to meet the needs of sensitively-tuned individuals
- pace your work to provide integration within the session
- learn to use (or refine your ability in using) "general listening" and other assessment methods
- borrowed from osteopathy.
